Within two weeks of shutting down, the Bicycle Collective reorganized, regrouped, and reinvented itself offering appointments for repairs and opening an on-line store while keeping employees on the payroll. Adult volunteers repaired and refurbished bicycle from their own homes, garages and park spaces.

The Bicycle Collective is honored to be a finalist for the 2020 Utah Ethical Leadership Award in the non profit category along with The Other Side Academy and The Inn Between House, this year's winner.

As the pandemic sent Utahns out of gyms and into their homes, local bike shops are trying to keep up with an influx in demand as they adapt to changing times.

Whether it’s fixing up a customer’s bike, or refurbishing and donating or selling an old one – when it comes to bicycle thrift shopping, Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective has been a long-time local go-to.

The COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic facing the country is having a profound impact on the economy and has greatly expanded the need for charitable organizations to provide additional services in an unprecedented manner. Individual charities already have lost millions of dollars in revenue and an economic downturn will undoubtedly result in further contraction in resources that are the lifeblood of mission-driven organizations.

Non-profits are an integral part of Utah’s social fabric and economic vitality. Our organizations serve and touch nearly all Utahns including our most vulnerable populations.  We serve children, adults and families, people with disabilities and of all backgrounds and orientations.

Economic development takes many forms. The EDCUtah model of growing Utah one company at a time is one way. There is equally important work taking place at the street level, one individual at a time. The Bicycle Collective is an example of this people-centric approach to grow our economy, by giving residents more ability to engage in meaningful work opportunities or career paths. 

The gifting of a bike just scratches the surface of the mission of the Bicycle Collective. Every person who receives a bike has access to the Collective’s dedicated volunteer crew who teach everything from bike maintenance to bike safety. 

But the mission is much larger than just gifting bikes. At its heart, the organization hopes to transform a city by transforming individual lives.

For newly arrived refugees still learning their way around Salt Lake City, bicycles offer an independent form of transportation giving adults autonomy and kids the chance to have some fun.

The Bicycle Collective team of volunteers and staff who earned Planet Bike's Super Commuter Award. This is the first time an organization has earned the award since its inception 15 years ago!

From grinding gears to tightening brakes, working on bikes can be intimidating and emotionally deflating for some people.

The Salt Lake Bicycle Collective is gearing up to welcome this season’s riders eager to tune up their bikes and make them look pretty again.

Remember the excitement of getting a new bicycle? Over the past couple hours, several children in Salt Lake have experienced that joy. It was made possible by a handful of local high school students.

This holiday season, the Ogden Bicycle Collective is working with Community Christmas — an event sponsored by the Ogden-Weber Community Action Partnership — to provide bikes for 100 local kids in need.

 A class of 18 young people gathered Monday at the nonprofit St. George Bicycle Collective for an inaugural lesson in bicycle mechanics.

A program designed to help more people get around via a healthy means of transportation is celebrating a full year of success at its new location in St. George.

Bicycle Maintenance has traditionally been an overwhelmingly (cis) male-dominated area. It is our goal to help teach individuals who have been marginalized or intimidated in this setting to be knowledgable and confident working on their bikes.  Maya Hardie, SpyHop youth filmmaker, explains this program offers a safe and supportive learning environment fo those who identify as women, trans, or femme.

For three hours on Monday nights, the Provo Bicycle Collective is only open to women volunteers. During these hours, Kira Johnson, an employee at the Bicycle Collective, leads the volunteers through bicycle mechanics and maintenance. Johnson can observe how enjoyable it is to know how to fix a bike.

Visit Salt Lake City’s Bicycle Collective on any given day and one will be surrounded by people who share a common passion.

Members of the Bicycle Collective believe that, more than being just fun, bikes promote stability and independence. A Utah-based company located in Salt Lake City, Ogden and Provo, its mission states that cycling is the cornerstone of a “cleaner, healthier and safer society.”

Designer Jessie Gilmore happens to be a pretty mean contour-line artist, she helped explain the gamut of different programs at the Bike Collective and how they all tie together to make some magic happen.
