Eagle Scout Projects for the Ogden Bicycle Collective

The Ogden Bicycle Collective would be happy to be the beneficiary of your Eagle Scout Project!

Please read our general Eagle Scout Project page first.

BIKE DRIVES:

The most common project is hosting a bike drive.  The scout is responsible for planning and implementing project logistics and coordinating volunteers to gather unused or unwanted bicycles.  The scout and volunteers will then pick up bikes (a large trailer is helpful), and arrange with Bicycle Collective staff to drop them off at our Community Bike Shop.  The scout and volunteers will also need to help us sort and organize donated bikes.

These bikes will be refurbished and given away to homeless, refugees, and low-income individuals; sold to fund our programs; or stripped and recycled. The average project should plan to yield between 50 and 150 bicycles.

Please contact our Program Coordinator at  or 801-997-0336 to find out if a bike drive is a current need and arrange a time to discuss your Eagle Project!

OTHER PROJECTS:

Eagle Scouts are encouraged to present other projects they feel would be helpful to the Ogden Bicycle Collective, however they are subject to staff approval.

Some current needs that may be fitting for an Eagle Scout Project:

-Obtaining funding for, and planning and constructing of a handicap/wheelchair ramp (this would include researching applicable ordinances and regulations, including ADA guidelines, and getting appropriate approvals)

-Helping to obtain funding for and planning additional storage for the Community Bike Shop (this would include researching applicable ordinances and regulations, and getting appropriate approvals)

-Organizing a donation drive based off of our donation wish list and any additional needs identified by staff

Please contact our Program Coordinator at  or 801-997-0336 to discuss your Eagle Scout Project Proposal and get approval before completing.

Earn-A-Bike

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

The Earn-a-Bike Program was created for youth who don’t have access or the economic means to purchase a bike. The Ogden Bicycle Collective gives them the opportunity to participate in the program where they volunteer and learn mechanical skills to repair a bike provided to them by the OBC. After the program is completed they will have a fully functioning bike to take home.

EDUCATION STANDARDS

  1. Twelve hours of volunteer work must be completed to earn a bike before taking it home
  2. Eight hours of volunteer work must be completed before picking out a bike
  3. The remaining 4 hours of volunteer work can be done doing maintenance on the bike to be earned

VOLUNTEER WORK

Volunteer work in the shop must be checked off by the Youth Program Coordinator, a total of 8 hours must be completed and recorded before a bike is chosen. Volunteer hours can be completed during Youth Open Shop Night, Tuesdays from 4:00-6:00 PM.

BIKE MAINTENANCE

After a bike is chosen, the remaining four hours of volunteer work will be mechanical work on the bike. The bike must be deemed safe to ride before it can be taken home. Our mechanics will assist with and oversee any repairs needed.

Please contact our Youth Program Coordinator  or 801-997-0336 with any questions.

Youth Open Shop Night

Tuesdays 4:00-6:00 PM at OBC (936 28th Street, Ogden, UT 84403)

Youth Open Shop is a night dedicated to providing an open work space for kids between the ages of 10-17. Kids can come in and utilize the shop with the help of a youth specialist, mechanics, and volunteers. During youth open shop kids may work on their own bikes; volunteer to earn a bicycle or parts; learn bicycle mechanics, safety, and teamwork; and help other kids with their bikes. Youth Open Shop is free and does not require pre-registration, however, benches are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Completion of orientation with a parent or legal guardian is required before attending.

Please contact our Youth Program Coordinator at  or 801-997-0336 with any questions.

Kids Bike Giveaways

OBC partners with community organizations to give bikes to kids in the community. OBC does Kid’s Bike Giveaways throughout the year with a large giveaway around the holidays at the end of the year. With the help of volunteers we work to refurbish kid’s bikes that have been donated to us and try to match kids with their dream bikes.

Juvenile Justice Jr. Bike Mechanic Apprenticeship Program

Our Jr. Bike Mechanic Apprenticeship Program (Jr. Bike MAP) with the Juvenile Justice centers are an adaptation of our in-shop classes. We’ve taken the course and made it more in-depth and mobile to provide it to youth in the Juvenile Detention Centers in local Juvenile Justice Centers. The course is turned into a 12-week course, with two, two hour long classes per week. Students completely refurbish bikes that have been donated to OBC and learn the skills they would need to gain employment in the bike industry once they are released. Classes are offered in a fall and spring and students who pass midterm and final exams receive a certification from the Ogden Bicycle Collective.
