The Bicycle Collective received $2500 to fund a fall series of after school bike mechanics classes for Elementary Schools in Washington County. We thank Intermountain Healthcare and the Community Partner Fund for helping us to provide basic training and FREE bicycles to elementary students from low-income families!⠀

The St. George Bicycle Collective provides basic bike mechanics training and bicycles to children in need as part of the GO WASH CO initiative, which is brought forth by several agencies including Intermountain Healthcare / Dixie Regional Medical Center, The Bicycle Collective, Southern Utah Bicycle Alliance, Southwest Utah Public Health Department, City of St. George Leisure Services, SelectHeath and the Healthy Dixie Council.

Eagle Scout Projects for the Ogden Bicycle Collective

The Ogden Bicycle Collective would be happy to be the beneficiary of your Eagle Scout Project!

Please read our general Eagle Scout Project page first.

BIKE DRIVES:

The most common project is hosting a bike drive.  The scout is responsible for planning and implementing project logistics and coordinating volunteers to gather unused or unwanted bicycles.  The scout and volunteers will then pick up bikes (a large trailer is helpful), and arrange with Bicycle Collective staff to drop them off at our Community Bike Shop.  The scout and volunteers will also need to help us sort and organize donated bikes.

These bikes will be refurbished and given away to homeless, refugees, and low-income individuals; sold to fund our programs; or stripped and recycled. The average project should plan to yield between 50 and 150 bicycles.

Please contact our Program Coordinator at  or 801-997-0336 to find out if a bike drive is a current need and arrange a time to discuss your Eagle Project!

OTHER PROJECTS:

Eagle Scouts are encouraged to present other projects they feel would be helpful to the Ogden Bicycle Collective, however they are subject to staff approval.

Some current needs that may be fitting for an Eagle Scout Project:

-Obtaining funding for, and planning and constructing of a handicap/wheelchair ramp (this would include researching applicable ordinances and regulations, including ADA guidelines, and getting appropriate approvals)

-Helping to obtain funding for and planning additional storage for the Community Bike Shop (this would include researching applicable ordinances and regulations, and getting appropriate approvals)

-Organizing a donation drive based off of our donation wish list and any additional needs identified by staff

Please contact our Program Coordinator at  or 801-997-0336 to discuss your Eagle Scout Project Proposal and get approval before completing.

On Saturday, March 24th, dozens of children lined up to receive a free bicycle from Provo Bicycle Collective.

Within one hour, PBC had given all 53 bikes to children for free.

Our hope is that each bike recipient uses his or her bike to get to school each day and continues that habit into adulthood. This way, we can reduce traffic, clean Utah's air, and create a healthier population.

We need your support in this cause!

Donate money or bikes today. $30 provides a bike for a child in need! Please give today!

Women, Trans, Femme Night

*Appointments Recommended for DIY Bike Projects*

A safe and supportive learning environment for those who identify!

Bicycle maintenance has traditionally been an overwhelmingly (cis)male-dominated area. It is our goal to help empower individuals who may have been marginalized or intimidated in this setting to be knowledgeable and confident working on their bikes. The Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective holds Women Trans Femme (WTF) Night in the shop every Wednesday from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. This program offers a friendly and inclusive learning environment for those who identify to fix their own bikes, buy bikes and parts, and learn all things bicycle!

COVID-19 Era Requirements: Masks & physical distance required! We’re accepting up to 5 people in the shop at a time to shop for bikes or parts -- or for you to pick up a wrench and DIY learn how to work on your bike.

Women, Trans, Femme Night is weekly on Wednesdays, 6:00 - 8:00PM: Please sign up if you would like to bring in your bike for DIY repairs or adjustments: our volunteer and staff WTF+ mechanics are happy to give pointers to help you get your bike going! Use of the shop for DIY projects (bench/tool rental cost) is waived for working on a bike at a stand during COVID-19 for the time being but donations are encouraged as all costs help support our educational and charitable programs! Walk in's are welcome for small shopping or DIY bench time.

Please note - bicycle adjustments often take longer than expected: if needed, sign up for more than one spot. Sign up here to ensure a DIY project slot: https://calendly.com/bicyclecollective/women-trans-femme-night

This space is for:

Anyone who identifies as female, transgender, femme, gender diverse, gender non-binary, trans-masculine, trans-feminine, or feels that their socialization or treatment as a woman, transperson*, or femme, + has impeded their participation in bicycle mechanics.

Women: A person who identifies as a woman.

Trans: Transgender, gender diverse, gender non-conforming, gender creative, anyone whose gender identity is fluid, transgressive, and/or transitioning.

Femme: A gender identity in which a person of any gender embodies a feminine appearance, expression, or identity.

If you are not WTF identified, BECOME AN ALLY:

  • Respect the space: Come during our regular open shop hours.
  • Respect People: During our regular open shop hours, treat all female & trans* folks as you would any other person (don’t assume they’re less knowledgeable, don’t call them “sweety,” and NEVER take a wrench out of their hand!)
  • Get Educated: Learn about the issues facing women, trans*, and gender diverse communities.
  • Educate others: About why and how to be an ally!

This program was implemented with assistance from BICAS.org and other WTF program models across the nation.

Sean Murphy joined the Collective's Board in 2015 and served once as Secretary and now Chair for a third term. He's focused on ensuring the Collective's future is strong and making sure every shop, current and future, is supported and stable.

Sean spends his days as the Legislative Audit Director for Salt Lake County and his weekends getting rad in the mountains, the rock, and the dirt. He'll ride any bike you've got.

Every kid deserves a bike. That’s why, in celebration of Provo School District’s Bike to School Week (September 10-15, 2018), Provo Bicycle Collective has committed to giving away 75 free bicycles to children whose families cannot afford to purchase a bike for them.

The bicycles will be distributed through the Parent Teacher Associations of Rock Canyon, Timpanogos, Sunset View, Provost, Franklin, Provo Peaks, Spring Creek, and Edgemont elementary schools.

Some children have already received their bicycles (see attached photos), but most will receive them during Bike to School Week.

Why is this necessary?

The National Center for Safe Routes to School found that only 2.2% of children biked to school in 2013. According to the Utah Department of Health, childhood obesity in Utah is rising as more children are driven or bussed to school. We hope these children use their new bikes to get to school each day and that they adopt an active, healthy lifestyle.

Due to the destructive nature of mountain biking Zach has found interest in repairing his own mechanical issues and helping others fix theirs.

Buy a Bike

We carry diverse, ever-changing selection of fully-refurbished used bikes. Our favorite bikes are "commutified"--reliable bikes from the 80s and 90s that we convert to comfy everyday bikes--but our shelves are often stocked with everything from feather-light road bikes to full-suspension mountain bikes. Because everything we carry is donated to us, we never really know what’s going to be on the shelf from week to week.

Come to our shop or call us today to find out what's in store!

Dear SLCBC Volunteers,

Whether you volunteered one hour, 25 hours, or over 100 hours in our shop in 2018, your hard work and service did not go unnoticed. Last year alone, we had a total of 1,738 volunteers who served a total of 4,533 hours in our shop. These numbers translate to volunteers fixing and repairing 386 kids bikes and 261 adult bikes that were then given away to folks in our community who needed them most.

In addition to these bikes being repaired and given away, we can't even begin to count the number of parts that were salvaged and organized, the number of nuts, bolts, and dust bunnies that were swept up, and the number of tubes repaired and sorted in our shop - all by the hands of our volunteers. Our shop's success is very much dependent on our volunteers, we can't do this work alone! Thank you for your service and for the care you have given by serving in our shop to support members of our community. We're excited to see you and new volunteers in our shop soon!

Sincerely,

Amy Wiscombe
Volunteer and Program Coordinator

Shop Volunteering

Volunteering with the SLC Bicycle Collective is a great way to gain invaluable experience within the community. We have open volunteering hours on Mondays between 5:30 and 9:00 PM and on Fridays between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM. You may stop in anytime during those hours - no sign-up necessary. We ask folks to serve at least an hour when they come to volunteer - you are welcome to stay longer or for the full block.

No experience with bikes necessary to volunteer. Our staff will teach you all the things you need to know about bikes to assist us in the cause. However, a skilled mechanic is always appreciated in our shop!

Instructions for volunteering:

Please meet at the SLC shop located at 2312 S. West Temple. The front door is usually locked, so ring the doorbell when you arrive. We will then have you complete an application and give you a walking tour/orientation of the shop that will cover volunteer duties, responsibilities, and expectations.

Wear clothes that you don't mind getting bike grease on. We provide shop aprons and gloves for all volunteers.

Volunteers in the shop typically work on fixing kids and adult bikes for our charitable programs, sort through bike parts and do miscellaneous cleaning around the shop. We provide all the educational support and resources for volunteers to successfully complete projects in our shop!

Bike Prom Volunteer

Every year the SLC Bicycle Collective holds an annual fundraiser called "Bike Prom". We need volunteers to help us make it a successful and fun event! Call for 2018 Bike Prom volunteers has ended. We'll put out a call for 2019 Bike Prom Volunteers next year!
